Exhibition: The Anthology of YL

Artist Statement

There comes a time when we begin to wonder where we came from—not simply in the physical sense, but in the quiet places where identity takes shape.

Long before we understand ourselves, we are surrounded by images, stories, characters, and worlds. We watch them. We play through them. We carry pieces of them with us. And, sometimes without realizing it, they begin to tell us something about who we are.

The Anthology of YL is an exploration of that process.

Through video games, animation, and sequential art, this exhibition looks back at the media that helped shape my understanding of the world—and, perhaps more importantly, my understanding of myself.

The characters of my youth were never merely characters. The avatars were never simply avatars. They represented possibilities. They embodied qualities I admired, questioned, feared, or hoped to possess. In their stories, I found fragments of my own.

So this work becomes a kind of excavation.

Layer by layer, I return to those influences—not to determine what they made me, but to understand what I chose to carry forward. From the first idea to the finished image, from the sketch to the completed multimedia experience, the creative process becomes a way of looking inward.

Because identity is rarely something we discover all at once.

It is built slowly, from memory and experience, from imagination and influence, from the things we embrace and the things we eventually leave behind.

And perhaps that is the great challenge of understanding ourselves: learning to distinguish between the person we were told to become and the person who was there all along.

The Anthology of YL is the documentation of these findings.

To look beneath the characters, beneath the stories, beneath the images—and discover what remains when all of the outside influences have been examined.

For before we can understand our place in the world, we must first understand the world within ourselves.

And perhaps, in the end, knowing ourselves is not the conclusion of the journey.

Perhaps it is where the journey truly begins.
